NEW YORK.- Do you live in the United States and still haven’t seen “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer”? This weekend you can catch up for $4 per ticket in theaters across the country.
The second National Movie Day will take place on Sunday, Aug. 27, theater owners announced Monday. All movies, in all formats and at all times, will cost $4 at participating theaters on that date. More than 3,000 theaters will join the annual initiative, representing the majority of theaters in the United States, including theaters from leading chains AMC and Regal.
It is the second consecutive year that National Film Day is celebrated. Last year, the event organized by the Cinema Foundation, a non-profit affiliate of the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO), was considered a huge success.
An estimated 8.1 million moviegoers purchased $3 tickets on Saturday, September 3. The average movie ticket in 2022, according to the association, cost $10.53.
The discounted date became the busiest day of the year for theaters. In a normally quiet season, theaters were full, and theaters sold plenty of popcorn. This year, the day was moved up slightly on the calendar, changing from Saturday to Sunday, and costs $1 more.
Ticket offices will close August with good results
Thanks to the interest that “Barbie” continues to generate, as well as “Oppenheimer”, the August box office has been booming. On Sunday, the summer box office hit the $3.8 billion mark in ticket sales, according to data firm Comscore, up 16.6% from 2022 over the same period.
While last year’s Movie Day had a smaller offering (“Top Gun: Maverick” was the main attraction, more than two months after its release), this year it will feature “Barbie” in its fifth week. Greta Gerwig’s film has grossed $1.28 billion worldwide.
There is also Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” (with 717.8 million worldwide), the second week of the DC Comics “Blue Beetle” movie and the premieres “Gran Turismo”, “Golda”, “Bottoms” and “Retribution”. (“Time Trial”).
The event will also serve for the public to see previews of the fall premieres.
