National Lottery launches online sports betting

The year 2023 will already have been exceptional for the Luxembourg National Lottery. Last year, its “gross gaming income”, in other words gaming income after distribution of winnings to players, reached a record amount of 76.8 million euros, an increase of 20.9% compared to 2022. Players, for their part, shared a record sum of more than 135 million euros, 42.7% more than the previous year. With a bit of luck, this sum could well increase even more this year with the introduction of a major new feature for the National Lottery: online sports betting.

Available for a few weeks, a new website, called loteriesport.lu, is part of the ongoing installation of more than 160 sports betting terminals across Luxembourg. From now on, all players in the Grand Duchy can bet directly from home, and responsibly, the institution insists.

Many sports available

With nearly forty sports available on loteriesport.lu, sports fans will have access to a wide variety of disciplines ranging from football to basketball, tennis and much more. “Whether it’s major leagues or lesser-known competitions, loteriesport.lu offers a complete betting experience,” says the National Lottery.

The latter says it is convinced that this new offer “will add an exciting dimension to our customers’ gaming experience, while strengthening our position as a leader in the gaming and betting sector.”

In addition to sports betting, loteriesport.lu also offers a range of electronic games similar to those already present on the National Lottery terminals, thus providing a complete gaming experience.

To celebrate this launch, loteriesport.lu is offering a welcome bonus. New users will see their first bet refunded up to €50 if it is a loser. Be careful, however, remember that gambling involves risks. The National Lottery therefore explains that it makes a point of protecting its users by integrating a full range of responsible gaming tools, “thus ensuring an experience that is entertaining, secure and safe”. “Transparency, security and player protection are at the heart of this new site, which reflects the National Lottery’s commitment to offering a safe and responsible gaming experience,” it adds.

A way to combat illegal gambling

This new platform should also provide a legal and secure gaming environment, thus avoiding the need for players to use foreign sites. “Since 2019, the National Lottery has been actively fighting against illegal gaming terminals in points of sale. (…) The launch of loteriesport.lu is a major step in this fight against illegal gambling.”

Finally, let us recall that the entire result generated by the National Lottery is used to finance, through the Œuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, social, cultural, environmental and sports projects in Luxembourg. Since 1945, the National Lottery has generated 543 million euros in profits, which have been entirely distributed to the Œuvre for its philanthropic missions.
