Po Bulgarian language and literature students scored an average of 70.5 out of 100, a score comparable to last year. There is an increase of 7 points compared to 2022 in the average result of mathematicswhich is 64.4 points out of 100.

On the scoring scale, where ‘average (3)’ is placed at 30% of the maximum score, the result in both subjects is ‘very good’.

The analysis shows that students have better knowledge of Bulgarian language and literature than mathematics.

The students who received a very good and excellent grade predominate, with 57.14% in mathematics and nearly 72% in Bulgarian language and literature.

By nearly 300 more than in 2022, there are exam papers evaluated with the maximum number of points – 1707. 9906 students have excellent grades in both subjects, which is 33% more than last year. 64 students have the maximum number of points – 100, simultaneously in both exams, and 31 students have 0 points. About 5% of the fourth graders have two poor grades.

“Good 3.93”: Which BEL tasks did the seniors find difficult

The multiple-choice tasks in Bulgarian language and literature mainly test language knowledge of an applied nature. The results show that students successfully recognize prefixes and synonyms, generally understand the meaning of what they read and the meaning of words in context. The dictation success rate is 75%, and the creative task – 63%. The creative task shows that students can create their own text using pictures and most of them correctly relate the actions of the characters to what is depicted. Students are unsure of conveying the emotional state of the characters and struggle to come up with a title.

Short free-response tasks provide information on whether the student navigates the content of the text. 62% answered a question that required an understanding of cause and effect relationships, but 41% could not provide evidence of an answer with examples from the text.

The multiple-choice questions of the mathematics exam show a very high success rate in performing the studied arithmetic operations, as well as confident recognition of geometric figures. The fourth graders had the greatest difficulty in question 3, where they had to find a missing digit in an expression related to the addition of four-digit numbers.

In the free-response tasks, the students were most successful in the rational calculation of a numerical expression, and their achievements were the lowest in the tasks of finding a face and perimeter of a rectangle and working with units of measurement.

The group with the highest results includes Sofia-city, Smolyan, Plovdiv, Varna, Blagoevgrad and Pernik. The fourth graders from Pleven are also performing well. Among the regions with the lowest results for a consecutive year are Kardzhali and Sliven.

Until June 15, inclusive, students can see their graded exam work at an assessment center designated by the heads of regional offices. The results can be checked HERE.
