With the participation of representations of 25 Local Electoral Public Organizations of the country, on this day the work of the National Interregional Forum “The Course of Civic Education from the local” concluded, organized by the Organization Fuerza Ciudadana AC, and the local electoral public organizations of Mexico City, Puebla, Sonora and Yucatan, within the framework of the “National Forum on Civic Education. Where are we going…”
During the closure of the meeting held at the headquarters of the Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM), it was agreed that the information provided by specialists in electoral matters be systematized and compiled in reports, for subsequent delivery to the National Electoral Institute (INE). ), in order to be taken into account in the development of the next national civic education strategy.
During the work of the second day of activities, in her speech, the IECM President Counselor, Patricia Avendaño Durán said she was convinced that promoting civic education means transforming the vision of children, youth, women and men, people older adults and minorities, as well as candidates and political parties, in search of a better society. She pointed out that the task of promoting civic values falls on the people who make up the electoral institutions, because they are responsible for disseminating civic education, “a task that we must undertake with great enthusiasm and dedication.”
For her part, the Director of the Fuerza Ciudadana AC Organization, Gloría Alcocer Olmos, commented that during the regional forums, various proposals on civic education were integrated to present them to the INE; She said she was convinced that the national electoral authority will have a space to analyze and follow up on them.
On behalf of the President Counselor of the INE, Guadalupe Taddei Zavala, the office manager of the Executive Secretariat of that electoral body, María Elena Cornejo Esparza, indicated that these forums make visible the work of the OPLEs in terms of civic education and the proposals that presented will serve to strengthen the national election system and in particular the civic education strategy. In this sense, she recognized the work that the local institutes do in substantive activities to trace the new route in the next strategy that is designed on the matter.
On the second day of the forum’s activities, in addition to a panel discussion, work tables (World Coffee) and a plenary meeting, the International Conference “Analysis of regional proposals and the future of Civic Education in Mexico for the construction of of world citizenship”, given by the Mtro. Máximo Alberto Zaldívar Calderón, director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems.
