National holidays will result in a spill of more than 30 billion dollars in tourism: Sectur

Mexico City. The celebration of Fiestas Patrias 2024 will leave an expenditure of more than 30 billion pesos for the consumption of tourist services, said Miguel Torruco Marqués, head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur).

The official explained that it is estimated that from September 13 to 16 of this year, the expenditure for lodging alone will amount to 2,767 million pesos.

For this “long weekend” or bridge, the Sectur expects the arrival of 1,192,000 tourists to hotels. Of these, it is expected that 924,000 will be national tourists, representing 77.6 percent, while the remaining 24.4 percent will be 268,000 foreigners.

The official indicated that during this holiday season, 1.421 million more national tourists will stay in other forms of accommodation, such as in the homes of relatives and friends, as well as in second homes.

Given this, it is estimated that the total number of national tourists will be 2.3 million tourists in this period.

Torruco Marqués indicated that, for this long weekend, another 180 thousand tourists, both national and foreign, are expected to stay in shared economy accommodation offered on digital platforms.

The head of Sectur said that hotel occupancy nationwide during this “long weekend” will be 59.5 percent.

The occupancy rate that will be reached in some destinations in the country during this year’s Fiestas Patrias will be 73.6 percent for the Riviera Maya, 71.6 percent for Cancun, 70.1 percent for Los Cabos, 69.9 percent for Mazatlan, 69.6 percent for Mexico City, 68.8 percent for Puerto Vallarta, 68.8, 64.7 percent for Monterrey, to mention some of the main destinations.

In Magical Towns, hotel occupancy is estimated to be 61 percent for Isla Mujeres, 55 percent for Tecate, 51 percent for Taxco, and 49.9 percent for Cozumel.

Torruco Marqués said that the Green Angels will provide mechanical assistance and tourist advice to travelers traveling on the country’s roads.

The Secretary of Tourism stressed the importance of both domestic and foreign tourism during this holiday period, which will generate economic benefits in various tourist destinations in Mexico for the benefit of the local population.
