National Heat Plan coming into effect in all provinces in the coming days NOW

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) will activate the National Heat Plan from Thursday. In the coming week, the Netherlands will face a series of tropical days.

The National Heat Plan is a warning of heat and the risks this can entail. It also counts as an appeal to pay extra attention to each other.

RIVM reports that it will be warm on Wednesday and that it will become even warmer in the coming days. “For many people, that means enjoying on the beach or in the garden. For others, it is not so nice and for groups of vulnerable people, the hot weather even entails risks.”

Persons of frail health include babies, the chronically ill, people who are overweight, residents of care homes and people in social isolation. According to RIVM, they should be extra alert this week about dehydration and overheating.

RIVM also warns against smog. Therefore, people who are sensitive to smog are advised to stay indoors and limit heavy physical activity. The institute focuses mainly on people with chronic diseases of the lungs, heart and vessels.

This is stated in the National Heat Plan:

  • Drink enough.
  • Wear thin clothes that protect against sunburn.
  • Find the shadow.
  • Lubricate the skin with sunscreen.
  • Limit afternoon and early evening physical activity.
  • Keep the house cool with sun blinds, a fan or air conditioning.
  • Pay special attention to people in your area who need care.

Week with tropical temperatures expected

According to Weerplaza, it will still be relatively cool on Wednesday compared to what awaits us. Temperatures of 30 to 35 degrees are expected in the next four days.

On Saturday, the hottest day of the week, it can even reach 37 degrees in the south of the Netherlands. It stays warm even after the weekend. “It looks like the heat will continue through Wednesday, August 13,” reports Weerplaza.
