In the fight against the corona virus, the US state of New York is deploying the national guard. As Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday, the National Guardsmen are to be mobilized in the suburb of New Rochelle, north of New York City.
They are supposed to supply the residents with food and clean public facilities in a newly established security zone with a radius of 1.6 kilometers.
Schools, places of worship and other meeting places will be closed in the area for two weeks, Cuomo said. The governor also assured that the area would not be quarantined. Shops would remain open, residents could come and go.
The protective measures and the deployment of the National Guard are necessary, said Cuomo. “It’s a dramatic move, but it is the largest accumulation (of coronavirus infections) in the whole country. It is literally a matter of life and death. “
To date, more than 170 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in New York State, 108 of them in Westchester County, where New Rochelle is located. The city of 80,000 is located near New York City. The first case was reported there early last week. In the center of the newly established restricted area is a synagogue, which is said to have played a central role in the spread of the virus.
Trump doesn’t need a test
US President Donald Trump currently sees no need to undergo a coronavirus test. Basically, he would do such a test, after all, it was “not a big deal,” Trump told journalists on Tuesday in Washington.
His personal doctor told him that there was currently no reason. “There are no symptoms, nothing,” said the 73-year-old. He feels «extremely good».
Trump recently had contact with three members of his Republican Party, who in turn had contact with a coronavirus infected person. One of them is Trump’s new chief-of-staff-designate, Mark Meadows, who has put himself in voluntary quarantine. A coronavirus test at Meadows was negative.
The virus is also spreading in the United States. According to the Johns Hopkins University, more than 800 infections with the coronavirus have been confirmed so far. 28 people died accordingly. Trump is currently preparing measures to dampen the effects of the virus on the US economy.
