For several years, National Education has suffered from a vocations crisis. Added to this is another phenomenon, that of voluntary departures of teachers. Their number has exploded in just a few years. To better understand this discomfort, we met Lola and Frédéric, two former teachers in the process of professional reconversion.
In 2009, National Education recorded 364 voluntary departures of teachers in France. This figure exploded to reach 2,836 departures in 2022. It was that year that Lola Turlan stopped teaching. For this woman from Poitiers, being a teacher like her parents was obvious, but after two difficult appointments (substitute in a college in Châtellerault then teacher in a ULIS class in Poitiers), her mission seems more and more complicated to her: « I had 12 students aged six to twelve, all with disabilities, all with special educational needs and I had to adapt the school program twelve times. »
It was also in 2022 that Frédéric Brunet, a resident of Vienne, left the teaching profession after more than fifteen years spent working with CM1-CM2 students. For both of them, it was during the health crisis that everything changed.
There was exhaustion in relation to the profession and there was a trigger in relation to Covid.

Going to class then becomes painful, Lola speaks of loss of self-confidence and the beginning of burn-out. Frédéric confides that he felt useless. Lola resigns and he opts for a conventional break.

Today, Lola has resumed her biology studies and Frédéric has embarked on a BTS in systems maintenance. Both say they are satisfied with their journey. They will graduate next school year. A new career far from the blackboards and, they say, without regrets.
