National Day Security: Deployment of 10,000 Police Forces in Ile-de-France Territory

In a context of tensions, the Minister of the Interior and the Prefect of Police of Paris announced the deployment of more than 10,000 police forces in the Ile-de-France territory on the occasion of the National Day. 130,000 police and gendarmes will be mobilized nationwide.

At a press conference, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced the deployment of a “exceptional device” the evenings of July 13 and 14. On the occasion of the National Day, and two weeks after the death of Nahel in Nanterre which provoked a series of urban violence and riots in Île-de-France and in the rest of the country, the Minister of the Interior has expressed his wish “to avoid the resurgence of violence“.

Thus, 130,000 gendarmes and police officers will be mobilized at the national level, “including 45,000 each evening specially equipped and organized to fight against urban violence“. 34,000 firefighters will also be mobilized.”The Raid, the GIGN, the BRI, the helicopters of the national gendarmerie, the drones will be mobilized according to the same modus operandi as during the riots“, announced the Minister of the Interior.

He also promised “maintaining all concerts and fireworks“July 13 and 14. But some municipalities have already announced that they are canceling their programming, this is the case of the city of Nanterre where the fireworks scheduled for Thursday have been canceled.

In Île-de-France, the region most affected by the riots in recent weeks, 10,000 police and gendarmes will be mobilized, announced the prefect of police Laurent Nunez. It is also envisaged, in consultation with Île-de-France Mobilités, that buses and trams will stop running these evenings from 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. The previous week, this device had already been taken, while public transport was the target of rioters. A total of 39 buses in the Paris region went up in smoke.
