Just three weeks before the start of the U20 World Cup in Canada, national coach Tobias Abstreiter has nominated a 27-strong squad to prepare for the World Cup.
The tournament will run from Sunday, December 26, 2021 through Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at Rogers Place (Group A) and WP Centrium (Group B) in Edmonton and Red Deer. On Monday, December 13th, the DEB selection will meet at the Federal Training Center in Füssen to prepare for the sporting climax.
The U20 team will complete two training sessions in the Allgäu before flying to Edmonton by charter on December 15th. Here the team goes through a two-day quarantine before they can continue the final preparation for the U20 World Cup. On December 26th at 12 p.m. local time (8 p.m. CET) live on Magenta-Sport, the German U20 team will open the IIHF U20 World Cup with the game against Finland. In the further course of preliminary group A, the DEB youngsters will face the Czech Republic (December 27), Canada (December 29) and Austria (December 31).
John-Jason Peterka (Rochester Americans) and Lukas Reichel (Rockford IceHogs) do not join the U20 national team after consultation with the DEB. Both strikers are currently convincing with strong performances in the AHL and are hoping for the leap into the NHL. Luca Munzenberger (University of Vermont), who was drafted in the third round by the Edmonton Oilers in 90th place, completes the DEB selection after their arrival in Canada.
U20 national coach Tobi Abstreiter: “We have put together a good squad. A third of the team has already had the experience of the last World Cup, which will be very important for us. In addition to the ten training sessions in Edmonton, we will also have the opportunity to play two test matches against Russia and Switzerland before we finally start the tournament against Finland on Boxing Day. ”
DEB Sports Director Christian Künast: “We are convinced that we will send a strong team into the race at the U20 World Cup. The tournament is of paramount importance in Canada, the home of ice hockey, and is once again a top event with top international players. We look forward to the challenges that await us in Edmonton and are proud to open the tournament against Finland.
