The work carried out by elements of the National Civil Police (PNC) during Christmas Eve and Christmas nationwide, consolidated a safe and calm festive atmosphere for national and foreign citizens. With the increase in police presence in shopping centers, ATMs, banking agencies, plazas, tourist centers, bus terminals and other places with high traffic, quality service was provided to the population.
The Minister of the Interior, Byron René Bor Illescas, highlighted this December 27, the commitment of the police institution to citizen security, as well as the significant reduction in crime incidence rates and the number of homicides, compared to 2022. “This is a product of the work carried out by the police forces to guarantee the protection of people and the security of the country during these festivities,” he stated.
In addition, the head of the Ministry of the Interior (Mingob) stated that he held a meeting with police commanders to evaluate the results obtained and strategic planning of new actions that contribute to guaranteeing that the end-of-year celebrations take place in a safe environment. and peace.
Results
According to data provided by the PNC, during the operations carried out on December 24 and 25, 236 people accused of various crimes were arrested. In addition, 21 firearms of different calibers were seized, and 2 vehicles and 4 motorcycles reported stolen were recovered. Compared to the same period in 2022, the figures indicate a significant increase in the effectiveness of police operations.
Last year, 116 people were arrested for different crimes, 16 illegal firearms were seized, and 7 2- and 4-wheeled vehicles reported stolen were recovered. These results demonstrate the commitment of the Government of Guatemala through the Interior Portfolio to maintain public security during the end of year holidays in the country.
