16 full-length feature films, 14 short feature films, 9 serial films, 8 animated films, two of which are full-length films, 17 full-length documentary films, 8 short documentary films and 16 student films, including from the Latvian Academy of Arts, Latvian Culture for the students of the Academy’s National Film School, Baltic Film, Media and Arts School and RISEBA.
Several of the applied films will not reach the audience until next year, including the “Lielā Kristaps” program. Nominees will be publicly announced by January 10, 2024. The award will take place from February 1 to 4, offering a program of films and special events, culminating in the award ceremony, which will be broadcast live by Latvijas Televīzija and LSM.lv.
Considering the large number of applications, experts will work in two selection commissions – one for feature films and animated films, the other for documentaries. The commission for feature films and animated films will include ten experts, including director Andis Mizišs, film critic Kristīne Simsone, screenwriter Aiva Birbele, director Dace Pūce, cameraman Jānis Eglītis, sound director Yevgenijs Kobzevs, artist Juris Žukovskis, film critic Elīna Reiter, animation film producer Sniedze Kāle and the National representative of the cinema center, Agnese Zapāne. On the other hand, six experts will work in the documentary film commission, including director Ieva Ozoliņa, director Dzintra Gek, director Uģis Olte, cameraman Dainis Juraga, film critic Anita Uzulniece and representative of the National Cinema Center, film industry information specialist Kristīne Matīsa. The experts have been nominated by the professional guilds and institutions of the film industry – the Union of Cinematographers, the Association of Film Producers, the Guild of Screenwriters, the Guild of Film Directors, the Guild of Film Sound Directors, the Guild of Film Artists, FIPRESCI – the Latvian branch of the International Association of Film Critics, the Animation Association and the National Cinema Center.
The National Cinema Award “Lielais Kristaps” is organized by the Latvian Cinematographers Union in cooperation with the National Cinema Center and the Ministry of Culture.
