National Choir of Jamaica Celebrates 51st Anniversary with Thanks and Recognition

The National Choir of Jamaica (NCOJ) 51st anniversary celebrations recently kicked off with a thanksgiving service at St. Jago de la Vega Church in Spanish Town.

Pastor Sir Kenneth Hall, in his congratulatory message, said the occasion was not simply an occasion to celebrate and rejoice, but more importantly, to remember the choir’s enormous contribution to countering the cultural imperialism that was a major feature of colonialism.

“By reframing the classical and choral tradition as a means of resistance and decolonization, the group has played a huge role in shaping and maintaining a distinct Jamaican cultural identity, a fact that should not be overlooked,” Hall said.

He added that NCOJ has used imposed musical forms to “integrate rather than separate, liberate rather than oppress, primarily by incorporating classical music forms into a vibrant Jamaican aesthetic for a welcome new expression” and that it was no coincidence that has included The Choral Rows over the years Over the years, many Jamaicans have distinguished themselves in the field of international classical music.

President Christopher Samuda, whose letter was read by director Paulette Mitchell, said the choir will continue to build on its significant musical heritage as the “National Choir of Jamaica” in search of the best voices to enable it to continue its mission of providing spiritual upliftment. to the current generation, as well as to the next. .

Founded in 1972, the National Choir had its beginnings with the goal of bridging perceived cultural gaps in Jamaican musical performances. His shows over the years have featured music from a variety of sources, with a common bond of high distinction, earning him popular and critical acclaim from audiences in Jamaica and abroad.

In 2022, to celebrate its golden anniversary, which coincides with the 60th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence, the choir has given special recognition to its strong members with its National Award of Excellence.
