Nation Pays Tribute to Fallen Hero on 128th Anniversary of Death

A century, two decades and eight years after the fall in combat of the Most Universal of Cubans, in the Santa Ifigenia Heritage Cemetery in Santiago de Cuba, floral offerings were deposited in the name of Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, of the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, the President of the National Assembly of People’s Power and the Council of State, Juan Estaban Lazo Hernández, and the entire nation.

The tribute was presided over by José Ramón Monteagudo Ruiz, First Secretary of the PCC in the territory, and Beatriz Johnson Urrutia, Governor. The highest authorities also paid tribute to the Fathers of the Nation, Mariana Grajales and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and to the Historical Leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz.

The Honor Guard ceremony on the occasion was performed by students from the Camilo Cienfuegos Military School.

In the central words, Julio César Rodríguez La O, First Secretary of the PCC in the Santiago municipality, expressed that: “with his physical loss in 1895 in Dos Ríos, he entered the pantheon of the immortal men of the Homeland”; He stressed that “Marti’s ideology is the patrimony of all Cubans” and “a source of convergence for the path of independence of the peoples of America.”

In his speech, the leader recalled the words of Faustino Pérez, a young man from the Centennial Generation, when he said: “let us not limit the homage to our Apostle to isolated words or acts on commemorative dates, let us honor him permanently with our conduct, let us meditate on the duty of each one, and let us rise up to comply, rendering to Martí, the living cult that demands his example”.

Franklin Luis Mesa Isaac, a second-year student at the Camilo Cienfuegos educational institution, and Head of Ceremony, shared with Sierra Maestra the symbolism of going every May 19 and the connotation that is renewed each day: “It is a pride to be here, commemorating the date. Our Apostle represents the thought of young people; his life and work has influenced me to be a better person.”

The cultural moments were carried out by the Santiago Ballet Company with fragments of the work Mi carne, poems set to music by the Maestro, and the Young Dwarf Prince Project, with the musical proposal “So that the Apostle would not die”.

Other cadres from the Government and the Party, from political and mass organizations, from the FAR, the Minint and a representation of the Santiago people also attended.

Once again, what was stated by José Julián Martí Pérez with his own existence is reaffirmed: “Death is not true when the work of life has been well accomplished”.
