The conductor Nathalie Stutzmann will take over the position of Music Director at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra from the coming 2022/23 season. Her agency confirmed this at the request of SZ. Stutzmann is currently chief conductor of the Norwegian Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra and first guest conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, founded in 1900 and one of the so-called Big Five, the five most respected orchestras in the USA. The orchestra of Atlanta in the state of Georgia, on the other hand, has only existed since 1945. With Allison Vulgamore (1993 – 2009) and Jennifer Barlament (since 2016) the orchestra chose women for the presidency, but there has not yet been a first female conductor. Nathalie Stutzmann, who is best known in Germany as a contralto, had already devoted herself to conducting during her vocal studies and had been able to celebrate international success for more than ten years. She stood at the podium of the Atlanta Symphony for the first time in December 2020, after which she was invited again for February 2021. As usual, your contract will initially be limited to four years.
