The S&P 500 is up 0.2% to a record high of 4290 points and the Nasdaq is up 1% to a new high of 14,500 points. The leading Dow Jones index closes 0.4% lower at 34282 points.
Facebook plus 4.2%. The social media company was sued by the FTC and prosecutors from 46 US states late last year. They accused Facebook of trying to eliminate potential competitors for years, including by buying them up. The judge said the FTC’s charge was insufficiently substantiated in law and fact. The complainants wanted Facebook to be punished and make amends for the abuse of power. This could be done by undoing previous acquisitions of, for example, WhatsApp and Instagram.
Boeing loses 3.4%. The manufacturer’s 777X aircraft made certain movements in the air during a test flight in December without the pilots touching the control stick.
Insurer Metlife drops 2.1%. The Dutch NN Group would like to take over a number of European parts of MetLife. The deal is said to be worth about $740 million, Bloomberg news agency reported. An agreement on Metlife’s Polish and Greek units could be reached as early as this week.
Space company Virgin Galactic increases 1% after an increase in its price target by investment bank Bernstein. Virgin Galactic jumped nearly 39 percent on Friday. The company, created by businessman Richard Branson, received permission from the aviation authority FAA for commercial flights to space.
Tesla climbs 2.5%. The company is virtually recalling nearly 300,000 cars to the garage in China. Model 3 and Model Y cars, according to Chinese regulators, need an online software update due to problems with the driver assistance system. The so-called assisted driving function in the electric cars can currently be activated without being instructed to do so. As a result, the car could suddenly start driving faster, for example.
