Get ready for NASCAR to take the checkered flag in Mexico City! The racing giant announced an exciting addition to its 2025 schedule: a cup Series race at the iconic Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez on June 15th. This marks a historic moment, as it will be the first international points event in the Cup Series’ modern history.
But bringing NASCAR south of the border is no small feat. Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s Executive Vice President and Chief Venue & Racing Innovations Officer, recently shed light on the massive logistical undertaking involved in making this international race a reality. In a September interview on Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour, Kennedy explained the intricate planning already underway.
“We’ve already done a handful of planning so far,and we’re going to have a lot over the next nine in a half months,” Kennedy said. “That’s everything from making sure our haulers can get from Michigan, if they’re going to stop in Charlotte they can get the Charlotte and make thier way down to Mexico City. It’s a pretty far drive to Mexico City. It’s a drive to Laredo, Texas or just south of that to the border, and it’s about double that to get to Mexico City.”
Kennedy emphasized the complexity of coordinating the movement of nearly 200 haulers, transporting teams, drivers, and equipment over 1,500 miles. He highlighted the need for meticulous contingency plans, especially considering potential weather delays at previous races.
“Just thinking about the timing of that, and then of course any contingency plans you might have around Michigan. God forbid we have another rain delay and you end up on Monday to make sure that everyone can get down ther for practice, and ideally, we start to have cars on track by Friday.”
Beyond the logistical hurdles, Kennedy stressed the importance of securing flights, ground transportation, and hotel accommodations for the influx of NASCAR personnel descending upon Mexico City.
Ben Kennedy shares more on the NASCAR Mexico City race planning
“We already started a lot of that planning. Naturally, it’s a little bit tough to plan when something hasn’t really been announced yet. Now that it’s been announced, I think it just accelerates a lot of that too,” Kennedy added.
The multi-year partnership between NASCAR and Mexico City promises to bring thrilling racing action and a surge of excitement to the international motorsport scene. As Kennedy and his team continue to meticulously plan for this historic event, anticipation is building for NASCAR’s debut in Mexico City.
