Nascar: Hamlin and Reddick, ahead on the dirt

Denny Hamlin won the final round of the NascarCup Series on Friday night on the dirt track at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Hamlin in the #11 Camry clocked 87.218 mph. Kyle Busch was second fastest at 87.091 mph in the #18 Camry, going 1-2 for Joe Gibbs’ team.

In the first session, Tyler Reddick topped the standings with a lap of 89.924 mph in the #8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.

Chase Briscoe was second fastest around the .533-mile track at 89.753 mph, followed by Kyle Busch, Justin Haley and Kurt Busch to complete the Top 5.

Like the opening practice, several incidents arose in the second 50-minute session. Bell, Aric Almirola, Kurt Busch, Austin Cindric, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., William Byron and Kyle Larson were among the drivers who scraped the outer retaining wall as ruts widened throughout the day.

The event is only the second for Nascar’s top division on a dirt surface since 1970. Joey Logano won the opening race last year, and his #22 Team Penske Ford was 19th fastest in opening practice and improved to seventh fastest in final practice. .

Four qualifying heats are scheduled for this Saturday to establish the starting lineup for Sunday night’s main event.
