Cup-Rennen 34: 21st Annual Hollywood Casino 400

The 34th station on the NASCAR calendar is the second of three playoff races in the decisive ‘Round of 8’ for a place in the finals. Four of the eight remaining drivers with the fewest total points are eliminated from the playoffs after Elimination Race 35. The best four pilots will then drive the 2021 champion in Phoenix.

The venue for the eighth playoff race is the Kansas Speedway. The speedway has only been featured in the cup calendar since 2001. Since the 2011 season there have been two events a year on the Tri-Oval near Kansas City. For the 32nd time, the pilots are driving the 1.5 mile long tri-oval with a curve superelevation of 15 degrees. On the start-finish straight it is 10.4 degrees, while the back straight has a banking of only five degrees. The race distance is divided into three stages over 80, 80 and 107 laps.

For the 34th race of the season, 40 drivers were registered by the teams. This means that for the ninth time this year there is a complete starting field with 40 drivers. The four open teams are entitled to start.

There were a total of four driver changes in the registered teams. Exceptionally, there was only one change at Rick Ware Racing. Ryan Ellis makes a comeback in the Cup in # 15. In 2015 and 2016, the 31-year-old competed in a total of five races in the top class. This season, Ellis completed a few races in the Xfinity and Truck series. Overall, he could not achieve a single top 10 placement in 86 races of the three series. To use such an unsuccessful driver in an important playoff race is a cheek.

Gaunt Brothers Racing fielded Parker Kligerman with the # 96. Motorsport Business Management presents two changes for Kansas. David Starr changes to # 13 and Chad Finchum is coming to Nashville for his second outing in # 66. The 39-year-old has the same track record in the three NASCAR series as Mister Ellis.

In May 2021, Kyle Busch won the Kansas Speedway for the second time. Last season Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano won the tri-oval for the third time and are together with Kevin Harvick the three active record winners. Of the remaining eight playoff participants, Martin Truex Junior and Brad Keselowski were able to achieve two wins each and defending champion Chase Elliott has won one race so far.
