The Voyager 1 probe, which has been traveling through space for almost half a century, recently began sending incomprehensible messages to Earth. Experts are now working hard to figure out what exactly happened to her.
“It basically stopped talking to us in a coherent way. It is a serious problem,” she said Voyager project manager Suzanne Dodd told NPR.
It also appears from the available information that all previous efforts to reset the probe have failed – which, given its age, is not too surprising.
We have no scientific data
“We have not received scientific data since this anomaly occurred. That means we don’t know what the environment the probe is traveling through looks like,” said Caltech astronomer Stella Ocker.
Over the next few months, experts at the Jet Propulsion Lab will try a number of different approaches to get Voyager 1 to send messages in binary again. But it won’t be easy.
“Even the button you press to open your car door has more computing power than the Voyager probes. It is remarkable that it continues to fly and that it has been flying for over 46 years,” said Dodd.
