NASA’s Unprecedented Discovery: Striped ‘Zebra Rocks’ Found on Mars by Perseverance Rover

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia NASA discovered strange rocks on Mars. The stone has a black and white striped pattern, similar to zebra skin.

The results came from the rover Perseverance traveling on the planet. The photo of the rock known as Freya’s Castle was taken earlier this month and was received by NASA scientists on September 13, 2024.

The castle is about 20 centimeters. The rock is loose and has a different rock base, which NASA said means the rock came from a different location.

Researchers are still confused and don’t know where the strange pattern on the stone came from. However, according to NASA’s original identification, the rock underwent a freezing process to form the striped pattern.

“Our knowledge of its chemical composition is limited. However, initial interpretations indicate that igneous and/or metamorphic processes may have formed the lines,” NASA said, citing from Live Science, Friday (4/10/2024).

For information, the freezing process is related to the crystallization of magma. Meanwhile metamorphic is a change in rock composition due to high heat and pressure.

It is possible that the rocks came from a higher crack. Then roll the stone where it was found.

At the same time, perseverance has been on Mars for three years. Launched in 2021, the rover is now on the slopes of the Jezero crater where it landed the last time.

There was perseverance for a month of climbing. Progress was very slow at first, but eventually they managed to get out on more level ground over the last few days.
