The successful completion of the mission is considered a major achievement in the development of NASA’s next generation of spacecraft.
The “Artemis I” mission lasted 25 days, during which “Orion” flew over the Moon at a distance of 130 kilometers.
Upon its return, Orion entered the Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of 40,000 kilometers per hour, but then slowed down to about 480 kilometers per hour.
Orion’s heat shield can withstand approximately 2,800 degrees Celsius. With the help of five parachutes, the spacecraft slowed down to about 32 kilometers per hour and landed successfully in the water.
Even before Orion landed, NASA Chief Bill Nelson called the Artemis I mission a stunning success.
It is expected that as part of the ‘Artemis 2’ mission in 2024, the spacecraft will fly to the Moon with astronauts, while the ‘Artemis 3’ mission will take an astronaut to the Moon.
Only 12 people have ever walked on the moon, all of them American. No humans have visited Earth’s moon since 1972, when NASA aborted “Apollo” missions.
