Technologue.id, Jakarta – The United States space agency, NASA, succeeded in bringing original samples from an asteroid that was of interest to scientists. The asteroid is called Bennu, which is said to one day hit Earth.

The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft collected rocks and dust from the surface of the asteroid Bennu in 2020. The spacecraft was launched in 2016 as part of NASA’s first mission to collect samples from an asteroid.

The plane will land with the samples in the Utah desert on Sunday. NASA said the “pure material from Bennu” would give generations of scientists a glimpse of the time when the sun and planets formed about 4.5 billion years ago, quoted from Sky.

Bennu, discovered by NASA in 1999, is estimated to have existed within the first 10 million years of the formation of our solar system.

The diameter of this space object is about 490m (1,600ft), it weighs 85.5 million tons, and is covered by huge boulders.

The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft touched Bennu’s surface and collected samples before launching from the asteroid in October 2020.

Bennu passes near Earth every six years and has had three encounters with the planet in 1999, 2005 and 2011, NASA said.

In 2021, scientists on the OSIRIS-REx team said the asteroid could possibly drift into Earth’s orbit and hit the planet in September 2182.

There was a 1 in 2,700, or 0.037% chance that Bennu would hit Earth that year, scientists said.

The asteroid would release 1,200 megatons of energy, about 24 times the energy of the most powerful nuclear weapon ever created, if it hit Earth, according to IFLScience.
