NASA’s Proposal for Handling Deceased Travelers on Moon and Mars Missions

NASA has come up with a proposal for what to do with the bodies of travelers who die en route to the Moon and Mars. NASA has released a special protocol in this regard while preparing for the lunar and Mars missions.

If they die during a trip to the Moon or Mars, there are two types of preservation. If a death occurs on the moon, astronauts can return to Earth with the body within days.

Since it can be quickly returned to earth, preservation of the dead body is not particularly important. However, priority should be given to getting the remaining passengers safely to the ground.

If death occurs 300 million miles en route to Mars, crew members will not be able to return. Only after completing the mission will the dead body also reach the earth.

Meanwhile, other passengers should keep the dead body in a separate compartment or body bag. The constant temperature and humidity inside the spacecraft help preserve the body.

Besides the Moon and Mars, if someone dies during a low-Earth-orbit mission, such as on the International Space Station, the crew can return the body to Earth in a capsule within hours. Since the start of human space exploration, 20 astronauts have died.
