NASA’s Mars rover Perseverance has discovered a strange rock that looks like a walrus.
Launched by NASA on July 30, 2020, the Perseverance vehicle landed on Mars on February 18, 2021, after a 7-month journey.
Perseverance, which will investigate the geological processes on Mars, its habitability, whether there was life on Mars before and biological traces, draws attention with the photographs it took.
Having photographed interesting rocks many times before, the tool has now discovered a strange rock resembling a walrus.
“LIKE VOLCANIC ROCKS”
The Perseverance team shared on the spacecraft’s Twitter account, “We took a closer look at this rock. Some of our team see similarities to volcanic rocks on Earth.” used his statements.
The detailed image of the boulder was captured by the spacecraft’s SuperCam Remote Micro Imager.
This camera, mounted on the “head” of the spacecraft, can observe the geological secrets of Mars even from long distances and zoom in on very distant objects.
Although this 2-meter-wide piece of rock looks quite interesting, the spacecraft, It focuses more on sedimentary rocks to detect clues to life forms.
Thanks to this research, Perseverance is looking for fossils of microscopic life forms that may have lived on Mars millions of years ago.
