A new 360-degree panoramic image of Jezero Crater on Mars, provided by NASA’s Perseverance rover, provides insight into the history of the ancient river delta on the Red Planet.
After 1,000 days of exploration, the rover is studying rocks in the river that are approximately 3.7 billion years old, according to astronomers and those conducting the study, confirming the presence of ancient life recorded in the rocks.
Ken Farley provides a guided tour of a richly detailed panoramic view of the spacecraft’s location in November 2023, captured by Mastcam-Z.
The new image consists of 993 individual images and looks in all directions from a location that the spacecraft’s science team calls “Airey Hill,” and parts of the spacecraft itself appear in the scene.
Astronomers have confirmed that Jezero Crater is a true treasure and one of the best locations on Mars to search for signs of past microscopic life.
The delta region, a huge group of rocks and sediments, was formed on the western edge of the Jezero Crater, at the meeting of the Martian River and the crater lake, which dates back billions of years.
