Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A powerful explosion occurred on the Sun last year. This phenomenon was caught on the camera of NASA’s ‘Parker Solar Probe’ spacecraft.
Quoted from BusinessInsiderWednesday (20/9/2023), this is the first time there has been close-up footage recording the eruption phenomenon or scientifically known as ‘coronal mass ejection’ (CME).
CMEs are large-scale explosions of superheated plasma that erupt in the Sun’s atmosphere. The explosion produced particles that could destroy communication systems on radio networks on Earth.
“The CME captured by the Parker Solar Probe is the largest solar explosion ever recorded,” NASA said.
Scientists from the John Hopkins Applied Laboratory also uploaded a video recording the CME incident.
Fortunately, scientists researching this phenomenon were able to survive, considering that the Parker Solar Probe actually flew by a CME.
For information, the Parker Solar Probe is a special aircraft that carries out research missions on the outer corona of the Sun. The aircraft is said to be the fastest space crew in history.
Parker Solar Probe is also the only aircraft that can reach the sun at its closest distance, namely 4 million miles from the sun’s surface.
This aircraft has been coated with anti-heat material and an automatic system that protects various devices from solar light emissions.
When Parker first detected the CME, it was about 5.7 million miles from the Sun’s surface.
“From the start, we knew that Parker Solar Probe could capture a CME,” said Jim Kinnison, Parker Solar mission engineer.
