NASA’s Open Program Enables Discovery of 2 New Planets

Amateur scientists have managed to find two new gaseous planets, as part of a project entitled “Planet Hunters TESS”, aired by Nasa, which allows ordinary people to help astronomers and others researchers from space to identify new celestial bodies.

The planets so far named “B” and “C” are considerably larger than the Terra and they bring motion close to a star, which is about 352 light years away.

The Planet Hunters TESS Project uses public data provided by the satellite of the same name, launched by NASA in April 2018 and which, to date, has identified more than 100 exoplanets, in addition to another 2,600 candidates with confirmation still pending.

As the data is public, anyone with some understanding of astronomical research or cosmology can seek information and data that will lead to the discovery of new celestial bodies. Basically, the satellite analyzes “light curves”, that is, the amount of brightness of the stars it can see.

Now, NASA hopes to discover more details of the new planets with the launch from the James Webb Space Telescope, scheduled for October this year.
