NASA’s New Horizons Spacecraft: Historic Flyby of Pluto and Journey to Arrokoth

SPACE — On January 19, 2006, NASA launched a spacecraft to Pluto. At that time, Pluto’s status as the ninth planet had just been forcibly removed.

New Horizons is a spacecraft the size of a grand piano, and was the first spacecraft to fly past Pluto. The plane was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on an Atlas V rocket.

New Horizons is the fastest spacecraft ever launched. Even so, the journey to Pluto took nine years and the mission was awaited.

New Horizons took the first close-up pictures of Pluto and for the first time, the world saw that Pluto has a very large heart. It also saw large and steep mountains and ice volcanoes.

After the flyby, New Horizons sailed toward a distant icy rock called 2014 MU69. It flew past this target on January 1, 2019. The Kuiper Belt object was later named Arrokoth. Source: Space.com
