NASA’s New Frontiers Space Program: Exploring the Moon, Outer Solar System, and the Search for Life on other Planets

Should we understand our own moon better, learn about the history of the solar system or search for life on other planets? This will be the difficult question for Nasa’s evaluation committee when the next destination in the New Frontiers space program is to be chosen.

In 2023, Nasa presented the list of destinations that are relevant for the program. Research teams from all over the world are now invited to submit proposals for space travel to five different destinations.

Two of the potential projects will investigate our own moon, one will explore a comet, while the last three may go to the outer solar system, namely Jupiter’s moon Io and the gas planet Saturn and the moon Enceladus.

The competition between the destinations can end up being very even, because although they are very different, they can all help us answer important questions about our home in the universe.

Read about the five destinations here – and choose your own favorite at the bottom of the article!
