Los Angeles, USA (ANTARA) – NASA’s Mars helicopter is targeted to make a new flight on Mars this week, the United States space agency said on Wednesday (18/10).
The new flight, the 63rd on the Red Planet, is planned to take place after October 19. The helicopter is expected to fly approximately 574 meters for 137 seconds to reposition at the new airfield, NASA said as reported by Xinhua on Thursday.
To date, the helicopter has completed 62 flights on Mars with a total duration of 113 minutes and a total distance of 13.9 kilometers, according to NASA data.
The helicopter, named “Ingenuity”, arrived at Mars’ Jezero Crater on February 18 2021, attached to the hull of NASA’s rover, Perseverance. This helicopter is a technology demonstration to test powered flight on another planet for the first time.
According to NASA, the helicopter is designed to fly for up to 90 seconds, covering a distance of almost 300 meters in one flight at a height of around 3 to 4.5 meters from the ground.
