NASA’s Mars Helicopter Completes 50th Flight to Red Planet

LOS ANGELES (ANTARA) – NASA’s Mars Helicopter has completed its 50th flight to the Red Planet, the space agency said.

The first aircraft on another planet made its 50th flight on Thursday (13/4), covering a distance of more than 322.2 meters in 145.7 seconds, NASA said. The helicopter also set a new altitude record by hovering at an altitude of 18 meters before landing near the 800 meter wide “Belva Crater”, NASA said.

The helicopter, named Ingenuity, arrived at Mars’ Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021, attached to the belly of NASA’s Perseverance rover. The helicopter is a technology demonstration to test powered aircraft on other planets for the first time.

Ingenuity will soon be commemorating the two years of its first flight, which took place on April 19, 2021.

The helicopter is designed to fly for up to 90 seconds, with a range of nearly 300 meters in a single flight, and at an altitude of about 3 to 4.5 meters from the ground, said NASA, according to Xinhua.
