However, the agency’s budget proposal for 2024 requested just under $950 million for the project, while an independent report estimated the cost to be between $8 billion and $11 billion.
The Senate Appropriations subcommittee has ordered NASA to submit a year-by-year funding plan for MSR in its proposed 2024 budget. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the mission. Despite the potential cancellation, MSR has achieved significant success thus far. The Perseverance rover has discovered soil samples containing evidence of organic matter, which could provide valuable insights into Mars’ history and the possibility of past life on the planet.
