REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released images revealing Crab Nebula as it has never been seen before, thanks to the capabilities of the James Webb Space Telescope. The Crab Nebula is one of the most famous astronomical objects known to astronomers.
This object is a remainder star explosion which illuminated the sky almost 1,000 years ago, so that its light could be seen from Earth from a distance of 6,500 light years. The Crab Nebula was visible for 23 days in 1054, and has been the subject of astronomical research for several centuries.
In its efforts to uncover the confusing history of this extraordinary object, NASA is using the James Webb Telescope worth 10 billion US dollars (around Rp. 159 trillion). “The sensitivity and spatial resolution of the James Webb Telescope allows scientists to accurately determine the composition of the materials contained in the Crab Nebula, especially the iron and nickel content which can provide clues about the type of star explosion that created this nebula,” said the research astronomer who led this research from Princeton University, Tea Temim, reported Daily MailWednesday (1/11/2023).
In images taken by the James Webb Telescope, viewers have to look carefully to find the Crab Nebula’s “pulsar heart,” which is located in the center of the object and has certain characteristics. White bands radiating from the core reveal the structure of the pulsar’s magnetic field that forms the nebula.
