Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope discovered a “ghost” object, a galaxy referred to as a “star factory.”

The galaxy, named AzTECC71, had previously been detected by James Clerk Maxwell’s telescope in Hawaii as a plume of dust emission. However, this object was not visible through the lens of the Hubble Space Telescope.

With more sensitive infrared technology, James Web was able to detect the galaxy. This discovery made astronomers excited because it could be a source of knowledge about the origins of the universe.

The reason is that AzTECC71 is a star-forming galaxy whose age is estimated to exceed 1 billion years or was formed only a few periods after the Big Bang.

Observations of AzTECC71 indicate that similar galaxies, where stars are born, are much more numerous than previously thought, namely 3 to 10 times more numerous.

If true, astronomers should reconsider their perception of the shape of the universe in its early days, namely space full of “dust.”

“This thing is truly a monster. Even though it looks like a small blob, [galaksi ini] forming hundreds of new stars every year,” said Jed McKinney of the University of Texas, in a press release. “This potentially suggests that there are many other galaxies still hidden.”

McKinney’s research is part of the COSMOS-Web project, which aims to map 1 million galaxies to find out about the origins of the universe.

He stated that James Webb could “penetrate the thickest dust curtain” so that it would change the way we think about the beginning of the universe.

“Previously, the only way we could see galaxies from the beginning of the universe was through Hubble’s optical perspective. This meant that our understanding of the history of galaxy evolution was biased, because we could only see clear galaxies that were not dusty,” said McKinney.
