LIVE Techno – The length of the day on the planet Mars shortens by three-quarters of a millisecond each year as the planet’s rotation rotates, according to new results from NASA’s InSight lander (Aviation and Space Administration).
A standard day on Mars, or so-called sol, has a duration of 24 hours and 37 minutes. But measuring the length of the day to fractions of a millisecond has revealed that the planet’s rotation rate increases minuscule.
Planetary scientists aren’t entirely sure why this is, but it’s likely related to the mass redistribution of Mars, which could impact the planet’s rotation like an ice skater pulling on her arms to spin faster.
This redistribution may be due to the accumulation of ice on Mars’ polar caps. Experts believe the surface was under a large glacier that existed at equatorial latitudes during the world’s most recent ice age, ending about 400 years ago.
To get a very precise measurement of Mars’ rotation rate, scientists use radio waves, launching from the Space site, Thursday, August 10, 2023.
“This is a historic experiment. We have spent a lot of time and energy preparing for the experiment and anticipating this discovery,” said Sebastien Le Maistre, a planetary scientist at the Royal Observatory of Belgium.
