NASA’s Ingenuity Helicopter Rests on Mars – Named after The Lord of the Rings Location

Jakarta

NASA helicopter that floated in Mars, Ingenuity, has been resting at a location on the surface of the Red Planet. The final resting place of Ingenuity, which was grounded after its final flight on January 18, now has the name of a location from the story The Lord of The Rings.

“The Ingenuity team nicknamed the place where the helicopter completed its final flight as Valinor Hills, after a fictional location in JRR Tolkien’s fantasy novels, including ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy,” NASA said.

Tolkien, a British writer, is best known for his fantasy works including “Lord of the Rings” (LOTR), “The Hobbit” and “The Silmarillion”. Several of Tolkien’s stories have been made into radio, television, streaming and film stories, such as the LOTR film series and “The Hobbit” directed by Peter Jackson.

Valinor is part of the Land of the Dead, a location frequently cited in Tolkien’s mythology. The most cited reference to the islands is at the end of LOTR. The elves provide protection to some of the main characters there.

Ingenuity has made 72 flights since landing on the surface of Mars with its companion robot, Perseverance, on February 18 2021. Its flight stopped on January 18. NASA engineers noticed damage to the blades, so they could no longer fly.

However, Ingenuity is in good health and can still send technical data to Perseverance as long as the robot remains in range. Perseverance will continue collecting samples for its Mars sample return (MSR) mission in the 2030s. This means that sooner or later, he will move away from Ingenuity.

NASA plans to continue deploying spacecraft on future missions, but there may be funding constraints. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages Ingenuity and MSR, cut 8% of its workforce this week due to Congressional uncertainty over the budget.
