NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope Observes Smallest Exoplanet with Water Vapor – GJ 9827d

GORAJUARA – Astronomers used NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope to observe the smallest exoplanet.

In this case, NASA telescopes detected water vapor from the atmosphere of the small exoplanet.

This small exoplanet has a diameter of only about twice that of Earth.

Reported by Gorajuara from the nasa.gov page, the planet named “GJ 9827d” is an example of a potential planet with a water-rich atmosphere elsewhere in our galaxy.

Apparently this planet has the same hot temperature as the planet Venus, namely 800 degrees Fahrenheit.

Certainly this planet would be very inhospitable if its atmosphere was dominated by water vapor.

Currently the research team has two possibilities, one of which is that this planet still depends on a hydrogen-rich atmosphere containing water which makes it like a mini Neptune.

Another possibility is that this planet could be warmer than Jupiter’s moons and Europa, which have twice as much water as Earth.

If the planet GJ 9827d has a residual atmosphere rich in water, then the planet must have formed far from its host star.

It has cold temperatures and available water in the form of ice, compared to its current location.

In this case, the planet will migrate closer to the star and receive more radiation.

The short of it is that this planet formed near a hot star with traces of water in its atmosphere.
