VIVA techno – National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA has invented a system that allows astronauts’ urine and sweat to be converted into safe drinking water while on the final frontier of space. “The team acknowledged that the idea of drinking recycled urine may make some people nauseous,” according to the space agency.
“But they emphasize that the end result is far superior and cleaner than what is produced by municipal water systems on earth.” he continued, launching New York PostFriday, October 6 2023.
Currently being tested on the International Space Station, the Urine Processing Unit extracts water from urine using vacuum distillation. From there, the system produces water and a urine brine that still contains water that can be reclaimed, while the system undergoes another process to extract the remaining wastewater.
After further filtration, the extract is cleared for takeoff and for re-consumption by the crew. As for sweat and moisture from astronauts’ breath, a device called a Water Processing Assembly operates in a similar way.

This new strategy, which will certainly help space exploration, saves 98% of NASA’s water needs and “is a very important step forward in the evolution of life support systems,” said Christopher Brown, life support specialist at Johnson Space Center.
“Let’s say you collect 100 pounds of water at the station. You lose 2 pounds of that and the other 98% goes around and can be recycled,” he said. “Keeping it running is an incredible accomplishment.” crew.
After all, each crew member needs about a gallon of water per day for their daily routine and food, according to NASA.

“The crew did not drink urine; they drink water that has been reclaimed, filtered and cleaned in such a way that it is cleaner than what we drink on Earth,” said Jill Williamson, subsystem manager of the Environmental Control and Life Support Systems on the space station.
“We have a lot of processes and a lot of field testing to provide confidence that we are producing clean, drinkable water.” he closed.
