The latest images shared by NASA show a groundbreaking discovery made possible by the James Webb Space Telescope. Scientists have spotted one of the two oldest and most distant galaxies ever seen. For astronomers, this is a real cosmic mystery, which they will try to explain in the coming years. That’s because the discovery challenges current understanding of how the first galaxies formed in the early universe. The first of the discovered galaxies already existed 450 million years after the Big Bang, and the second even 350 million years. This would surpass the previous record held by a galaxy formed 400 million years after the universe began. It should also be noted that both galaxies are tiny compared to Earth’s Milky Way, so they are only a small percentage of its size. Scientists have yet to confirm the distances of these galaxies by analyzing the spectral properties of their light. Further studies will reveal the rate of formation of the first stars and the abundance of elements in their composition.
