SPACE — On January 12, 2005, NASA launched the Deep Impact mission to impact comet Tempel 1, also known as 9P/Tempel. Two spacecraft were launched together for the mission.
One of them is a flyby vehicle the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. While the other is an impact plane the size of a coffee table.
The mission was to study the interior of a comet by impacting its surface and taking images of the impact crater. He will also record all the dust and dirt thrown into space.
Deep Impact was launched from Cape Canaveral on a Delta II rocket. He then spent nearly six months chasing the comet before it crashed. Source: Space.com
