Scientists are working on a nasal spray that can nip infection with the corona virus in the bud. The results of research on ferrets are promising.
A drug-like molecule in the spray can come into contact with virus cells in the nostrils to activate the body’s immune system. INNA-051, as the active ingredient is called, activates a number of processes, including the release of the now well-known immune cells, cytokines. These then stimulate the mechanism that prevents the virus from multiplying in cells.
An extensive study of, among others, Public Health England researchers in ferrets was very successful. Research in humans must now determine whether the drug is safe and effective against the corona virus. People could then use the nasal spray several times a week as a precautionary measure, starting with at-risk groups and healthcare workers.
“The hope is that the drug will reduce the duration and severity of symptoms. If you can reduce the number of virus particles in the nose, the chance of transmission may also be smaller, ”thinks infectious diseases professor Roberto Solari of Imperial College London, who was not involved in the study himself.
