NASA x Boeing Creates a New Aircraft, Ready to Transport Passengers in the 2030s

Jakarta

Commercial aviation technology that is claimed to be more environmentally friendly may be coming soon. NASA and Boeing is working on it.

Launch CNN, Thursday (19/1/2023), in the Sustainable Flight Demonstrator project they are building, testing and flying a low-emission single-aisle aircraft. This decade is the operating range.

“Our goal is to manufacture and test a full-scale demonstrator aircraft that will help produce a more fuel-efficient future commercial aircraft. If successful, this technology will be rolled out in the 2030s,” said the Administrator. NASABill Nelson.

The first test flight of this experimental aircraft will be in 2028. The aim is for the technology to service around 50% of the commercial market via single aisle aircraft, over short to medium distances.

Currently, most airlines rely on single aisle aircraft. It accounts for almost half of worldwide aviation emissions, according to NASA.

Developing new technologies to reduce fuel use could support the Biden administration’s goal of achieving net-zero aviation carbon emissions by 2050, as laid out in the US Aviation Climate Action Plan.

Boeing predicts that demand for new single-aisle aircraft will increase by 40,000 aircraft between 2035 and 2050.

Design in progress NASA and Boeing can reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 30% compared to today’s most efficient aircraft, according to the agency.

This concept is called the Transonic Truss-Braced Wing. The technology relies on a thin, elongated wing stabilized by diagonal struts connecting the wing to the aircraft.

The shape of the design creates less drag, which means burning less fuel. The Sustainable Flight Demonstrator will also incorporate other eco-friendly aviation technologies.

The partnership, supported by a Funded Space Act Agreement, is funded by USD 425 million from NASA over seven years. Boeing and its partners contributed USD 725 million.
