NASA Warns of Possible Internet Apocalypse in 2025 Due to Solar Storm

TRIBUN-MEDAN.COM – On Wednesday (28/6/2023), the United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) warned and predicted that a solar storm would occur in 2025.

The storm is expected to trigger interference with electronic devices and affect satellites in the atmosphere. As a result, there is the potential for disruption to the internet, cellphone signals and satellite television for months or what is called an internet apocalypse.

Information about the internet apocalypse was also widely discussed on social media X (Twitter). The post states that humans will live without the internet when the internet apocalypse occurs.

“There has been news circulating that NASA has been warning of an internet apocalypse for months in 2025,” wrote the account, which has been broadcast millions of times and shared by thousands of X users.

So, is it true that solar storms can cause an internet apocalypse on Earth?

In the article Kompas.com quoted on Friday (3/11/2023), the Chair of the CISSReC Cyber Security Research Institute, Pratama Persadha, explained that the prediction of a solar storm causing an internet apocalypse in 2025 had long been expressed by NASA and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

A solar storm is an event where the Sun’s poles change, causing the release of billions of electromagnetic particles into the Solar System.

Even though the Sun’s particles will be scattered throughout the Solar System, Pramata revealed that the layer of air surrounding the Earth will make the effect invisible to the human body.

However, different conditions can occur in various telecommunications systems that work using radio signals such as satellite, radio and television.

“The effects of electromagnetic waves released by the Sun during a solar storm can disrupt the process of sending and receiving signals,” he said, Tuesday (4/7/2023).

This condition is likely to disrupt the communication process. However, Pratama also stated that predictions of an internet doomsday or the condition of the Earth completely losing internet signal due to solar storms were not completely correct. This is because not all telecommunications and internet systems will be affected by solar storms.

According to this lecturer at the State Intelligence College (STIN), communication via fiber optic will still be able to run as usual.

According to him, fiber optic or fiber is an internet service technology that transmits signals via cable.

“It’s just possible that the capacity that can be accommodated will decrease because some signal transmissions still use satellites and radio which will be disrupted during solar storms,” he explained.
