Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
NASA researchers use hot air balloons to detect earthquakes on the Planet Venus.
Previously, scientists were able to detect aftershocks in California in 2019 using the same technology.
During the test, US Department of Energy researchers triggered a 50-ton chemical explosion some 300 meters underground to generate a vibration of magnitude 3 to 4 to verify the balloon’s capabilities.
The balloons carry a barometer to measure changes in atmospheric pressure and detect the infrasound waves of earthquakes.
It can also measure low-frequency acoustic vibrations below the human hearing threshold.
Each balloon is several hundred meters above the ground.
Scientists hope this technique can be used to unravel the mysteries of Venus.
Until now no one has been able to land on Venus because the temperature and air pressure is very high.
