The analysis revealed dozens of additional bright radar reflections over a much wider range and depth than ever before. In some areas, where temperatures are estimated to be minus 63 degrees Celsius, they were seen higher than 1.5 kilometers below the surface.
Noting a 2019 paper in which researchers calculated the heat required to melt the subsurface ice in this region, Khuller said volcanic activity below the surface could explain the potential presence of liquid water below the south pole.
