NASA team operates its Mars explorer from home

Given the distance between Earth and the place where the Curiosity rover operates, it can be said that the team that manages it has always worked remotely, only before they all did it from the same place.

Programming each action on NASA’s Curiosity rover – which has been exploring the Martian surface since 2012 – requires around 20 people, who develop and test the commands while chatting with dozens of others who are in various places today.

“Normally we are all in the same room, sharing screens, images and data. People talk to each other and in small groups from different parts of the room,” revealed Alicia Allbaugh, who heads the Mars Explorer team.

However, with the covid-19 pandemic the work process has been complicated and now specialists take much longer to make a decision, since they all work from home and have to coordinate each step in messaging or video conferencing applications.

The group leader of these scientific investigations, Carrie Bridge, confessed that she has to constantly review 15 chats and “juggle” more than she would ever do under normal conditions.
