NASA Suspects Water Hidden in the Moon’s Shadow

Suara.com – To scientist NASA suspect Moon surface the rough and the shadows that accompany it, can be a hiding place for water ice.

Even though it looks like dry skin, the Moon likely has water all over its surface.

However, experts aren’t quite sure how this happened because there’s no atmosphere to regulate the temperature during the day, so the Moon’s surface is hot enough to boil water.

If there is trapped water, the water can turn to ice overnight when the surface temperature drops to around minus (-) 150 degrees Celsius.

But somehow research has shown that there may be water on the Moon’s surface during the day, when the temperature is very hot.

“More than a decade ago, spacecraft detected the possible presence of water on the Moon’s surface during the day,” said Bjorn Davidson, an astrophysicist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

This was confirmed by NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) in 2020.

This observation was initially contradicted by previous theories. Water should not survive the harsh Moon environment.

It also challenges human understanding of the Moon’s surface and raises interesting questions about how volatiles, such as water ice, can survive on objects without air.

Research conducted in 2009 previously found that the amount of water changes depending on the time of day.

The team used thermophysical models to understand this and reported that there may be less water before noon on the hottest parts of the surface, but increases in the afternoon when temperatures start to cool.

In a recent study, Davidson and other researchers updated the model by making the Moon’s surface much rougher.

Scientists found that the rough surface of the Moon creates a shadow that allows the Moon to retain its water and allows water to move as temperatures warm or cool again.

“This model provides a new mechanism that explains how water moves between the Moon’s surface and the Moon’s thin atmosphere,” Davidson added. Science Alert, Wednesday (4/8/2021).

The lunar surface temperature model described in this study has significant implications for understanding the existence and evolution of water on the lunar surface.
