NASA Study Solves Mystery of “Green Monster” Supernova Remnant Discovery from April 2023

According to NASA’s website, the latest study helped solve the structure called “Green Monster”, which was discovered in April 2023 by scientists examining the James Webb Space Telescope’s data on Cas A.

Scientists who wanted to get to know the Green Monster examined Cas A closely with the X-ray imaging systems of the Chandra Observatory, the James Webb Space Telescope, and partly the infrared imaging systems of the Spitzer Space Telescope and the visible light imaging systems of the Hubble Space Telescope.

SILICON AND IRON GAS WERE FOUND AT HIGH TEMPERATURES

Researchers concluded that the Green Monster was formed as a result of the explosion wave of the supernova hitting the surrounding materials, and found that the supernova remnant contained silicon and iron gas at high temperatures.

To gather information about the supernova explosion, NASA scientists marked zinc, which decayed into iron, and titanium, which was still highly radioactive, on the map and traced the “intact” debris from the explosion.

“NO ONE HAS OBSERVED SUCH STRUCTURES IN AN EXPLODED STAR BEFORE”

The researchers also noted that radioactive materials released as the supernova’s core collapsed mixed with the star’s inner layers, forming fine structures in the “pristine” debris and shaping the debris.

“For the first time, we have mapped pristine debris in the meshwork at the center of this supernova remnant. No one has observed such structures in an exploded star before,” said Danny Milisavljevic, astronomer and faculty member of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Purdue University. he said.
