The image captured giant ring-shaped clouds, known as cavum clouds, hovering over the Gulf of Mexico. These peculiar clouds have a natural explanation but have often been mistaken for aliens or other strange occurrences.

The photo was taken by NASA’s Terra satellite, which was passing over the Gulf of Mexico when its instruments captured the intriguing sight. Cavum clouds have been documented by researchers since the 1940s, but it wasn’t until about 15 years ago that scientists were able to explain their formation.

Cavum clouds, also referred to as hole-punch clouds or fallstreak holes, are so large that they can be seen both from the ground and in space. They resemble someone taking a hole punch to the sky, hence their nickname. The unique appearance of these clouds has led to numerous misconceptions, with people often mistaking them for flying saucers or other unusual phenomena.

The formation of cavum clouds relies on human technology. They occur when airplanes pass through mid-level altocumulus clouds, which are composed of supercooled droplets. Two studies published in 2010 and 2011 by researchers from NASA’s Langley Research Center shed light on the phenomenon. The studies found that the shallower the angle at which a plane passes through the clouds, the larger the cavum left behind will be. This means that any type of airplane can produce these distinctive clouds.

The recent photo captured by NASA’s Terra satellite showed a cluster of cavum clouds near the west coast of Florida on January 30. The phenomenon is believed to be heavily influenced by the more than 1,000 flights per day coming from the Miami International Airport. The Terra satellite is specifically designed to study changes in Earth’s atmosphere and the effects of climate change. Researchers utilize data collected from the satellite to map the impact of human activity and natural disasters.

The discovery of cavum clouds and their subsequent explanation have provided valuable insights into atmospheric phenomena.
